This museum is part of the Principality’s Museum System and the Network of Ethnographic Museums of Asturias, and participates in joint activities with the other members of the region’s network.

Objectives

It is dedicated to maritime activities in all their various forms. This facility, which was established in response to the interest in the marine world in Asturias, provides a comprehensive overview of the different activities, documentation, bibliography, and images related to maritime life.

It is divided into four sections:

  • Marine Biology. This section serves as an introduction to the marine environment. It features numerous specimens of marine flora and fauna, ranging from fossils that tell us about life millions of years ago to those that can be seen alive and well in the aquariums.
  • Shipbuilding. This exhibition showcases the process of building traditional wooden boats, featuring photographs, blueprints, templates, tools, and other equipment typical of this demanding craft.
  • Traditional fishing. This exhibition complements the previous one and offers insight into how our ancestors made their living. It features fishing gear and equipment, along with boats and numerous accessories, such as anchors, clothing, basketry, etc.
  • History of Navigation. With an exhibition of more than fifty models, the display traces the evolution of ship design from antiquity to the present day. It features sections dedicated to maritime rescue, the Spanish Navy, and the Asturian merchant marine.

The exhibition also features an extensive collection of maritime iconography in various materials (ceramics, ivory, glass), as well as examples of folk art, toy boats, and other figurative objects with a maritime theme.

It has a specialized library and an archive.
